Why Spada Has Pioneered EN 343 Motorcycle Gear
As riders in the UK, we're all too familiar with the constant downpours that come with British weather. Rain and storms are often unwelcome companions on our journeys. For those of us who ride day in and day out, it's often a constant battle to stay dry on days of relentless British rain, as water inevitably finds its way into supposedly waterproof gear.
Our design team set out to tackle the challenge of engineering motorcycle gear that is not just protective but keeps you dry in the harshest British weather. Looking beyond the motorcycle industry, our focus shifted towards those who endure foul weather conditions day in and day out, such as highway maintenance, who have no choice but to brave the elements.
Digging further, we interrogated how their gear is designed and tested, how they manage to stay dry, comfortable, and safe throughout their demanding tasks. This led us to the discovery of EN 343, a European standard specifically for protective clothing designed to evaluate a garment's performance during prolonged exposure to harsh weather conditions.
Why is EN 343 Different?
Unlike other waterproof clothing, the EN 343 standard is specific to protective clothing and comprehensively assesses the entire garment construction, including zips, seams, and outer fabric, guaranteeing robust protection against rain, snowflakes, fog, and ground humidity while upholding breathability and comfort levels.
With EN 343, you will not find a waterproof rating such as 20k, as you might with high street or outdoor and adventure clothing. This is crucially where EN 343 is different, as it combines waterproofness with protective qualities such as strength and tear resistance. While there are higher-rated waterproof fabrics available, they will not protect you in an accident.
EN 343 garments are tested for tensile strength and tear resistance as well as water penetration and breathability. The tear strength assessment adheres to the same standards as EN ISO 4674-1:2016, the method employed for motorcycle clothing. However, the inclusion of tensile strength testing sets EN 343 apart, as it measures the maximum stress a material can endure before breaking (minimum 450 N). Additionally, the outer shell material's seams must meet or exceed 200 N.
What Does the Logo Mean?
When you see the EN umbrella on a garment, it signifies that the product has undergone rigorous testing and meets specific criteria outlined by EN 343 as explained above. The first number indicates the garment's class for resistance to water penetration. All Spada’s EN 343 products reach level 1, which are tested to a water pressure greater than 8000 Pa. The second number denotes the garment's class for water vapor resistance, and Spada’s garments achieve level 2, permitting prolonged wear in temperatures below 20 degrees Celsius. Even in higher temperatures, the garment effectively wicks away moisture generated by your body for a minimum of 105 minutes. However, you can extend this duration significantly by utilizing vents or taking breaks as needed.
The final character X signifies the garment has not undergone any optional testing. Watch this space, we are currently pursuing options for this.
Independently Tested
While a garment displaying the EN 343 umbrella mark typically falls under self-certification, Spada's EN 343 motorcycle gear undergoes an additional level of scrutiny due to the necessity of CE testing. Consequently, we work with an independent notified body to oversee the assessment process of Spada motorbike gear, ensuring it meets both standards.
